ISAY Debating Round 2

Today at around 5:45pm (Tuesday 27th March) in Avondale College, there was some intense action going on in one of the rooms. It was debating!

Yes I am in one of the debating teams, though I’m afraid I do kind of suck. I’m not that good at all. Afterall, I’m quite shy and I have nothing that stands out in my speech.

Anyways, the topic was:

“The NZ driving age should be raised to 18 years old”

For this moot, I was luckily on the affirmative side. This game me (and I think my team) an advantage because there has been quite alot of debates in government etc. as well, because of the recent reckless driving from teenagers. I don’t want to be a burden to the society, so I’m waiting till I’m 18 before I’m thinking of driving or buying a car.

The debate was pretty exciting. We were versing Kelston. Apparently (or so I’ve heard), their team consisted of around 20 members O_o. That is like… so many people, I doubt many would even get two times to debate. Why don’t they just make another debating team? It’s alot simpler that way don’t you think?

Anyway, I was talking about brain development for teenagers and how it isn’t fully developed to be even thinking of driving on the roads. I managed not to stumble that much and tried to use a bit of actions and etc. My other team members was way better than me. [For privacy reasons I won't include the names], but our first speaker had a pretty good leader’s reply. And out third speaker was really good for her rebuttal.

Results?

OVERALL, WE WON!

Haha, my first debate of the year, we have won two in a row now. Hopefully we can keep up this winning streak and hopefully get into the Quarter/Semi finals and even further from there! (so long as I don’t drag my teammates down =P)
I heard the next debate (in a few weeks time) is going to be an impromptu. This means we get limited preperation time (1 hour) to come up with our speeches of around 4-6 minutes. I am not good at that, but we’ll see how it goes.
